The Triochron Physics Prize is an annual competition open to tertiary and senior secondary students in Tasmania, with a prize awarded in each of the two student categories. First prize for the tertiary category is $2000 and the senior secondary prize is $1000.

This year's Triochron Physics Prize requires you to address the following problem:

Assess the plausibility of the following paradox.

An automated device sends a photon through a closed time-like curve to a point that predates its departure. The photon includes a harnessed message with instruction to the device to switch itself off.

In presenting your answer, ensure you explain the scientific basis that underpins your conclusion.
