Join us at the Preview and Artist Talk with Katherine Hattam for teachers and students at Devonport Regional Gallery to see the Deakin University touring exhibition Katherine Hattam: Desire First.

Katherine Hattam: Desire First surveys the work of Melbourne based artist Katherine Hattam. The exhibition traces the development of Hattam's practice from early charcoal drawings in the late 1970s through an evolving practice that encompasses drawing, collage, printmaking and sculpture. Katherine Hattam is renowned for explorations of domestic and family spaces that are at times joyful, dramatic and intense.

Hattam uses recurring motifs, in particular the chair and other domestic objects, alongside collage drawn from deconstructed Penguin classics and modernist textbooks from her late mothers' collection. These references provide an engaging and familiar connection for students viewing the work and offer many links across all key components of the Visual Arts Curriculum for further investigation including symbolism, influences, communicating ideas, purpose, making connections, audience, ideas and personal response.

Following the Preview and Artist Talk we encourage you to stay for the Opening of the exhibition at 6 pm.
Drinks and nibbles provided.
