Reminder Vitamin D Guidelines for Tasmanians - attention darker skin types

Intended Audience: Principals and Heads of HPE Departments

There appears to be ongoing confusion as to whether children with dark skin types should wear a hat during high UV periods.

Please refer to Vitamin D guidelines attached.

People with darker skin types are recommended to wear the same protective gear as those with other skin types from mid October - mid March to reduce the risk of UV damage in particular to the eyes.

Whilst we recognise sunglasses are not practical, hats should be worn.

We urge secondary school principals to enforce these sun safe measures in their schools as melanoma is the most common cancer in 15-29 year olds.
