Location: Trevallyn, Gordon, Paloona, Devils Gate, Lake Margaret, Waddamana and Tarraleah

Intended Audience: Teachers and students

Hydro Tasmania is inviting the Tasmanian community to take a look inside its power stations, as part of a program of events to celebrate its centenary this year.

The first will opportunity will be at Trevallyn, which will be open to the public on Sunday 31 August.

Operating power stations are seldom open for public access, for safety and operational reasons. This is a rare opportunity to visit some of the thirty hydropower stations across Tasmania, built over the past one hundred years, that deliver energy to homes and businesses across Tasmania.

Guided tours will be held at six working power stations, including Lake Margaret near Queenstown, which is also celebrating its centenary this year. There will also be guided tours of Waddamana Power Station Museum – the Hydro's first power station– during the Back to Waddamana Day - a free family event on Sunday 26 October.

Tours will be provided by current and former employees of Hydro Tasmania and will give insight into management of these large assets, and how Hydro Tasmania converts water from lakes and rivers into electricity that powers the lights and appliances we use every day.

Children are welcome to join these tours, and getting a first-hand look at these power stations may provide inspiration for entries to Hydro Tasmania's Schools Future Thinking competition (learn more on the website).

There is no need to book for power station tours, you can just turn up on the day. Please be advised that for safety reasons tour group sizes will be limited so there may be a short wait between tours during peak times.

The following power stations will be open to the public over coming months:
  • Trevallyn - Sunday 31 August
  • Gordon - Sunday 21 September
  • Paloona - Sunday 12 October
  • Devils Gate - Sunday 12 October
  • Lake Margaret – Saturday-Sunday 11-12 October (during the Queenstown Heritage and Arts Festival)
  • Waddamana Power Station Museum - Sunday 26 October
  • Tarraleah – Sunday 9 November
