Improving Outcomes in Literacy through the Power of Nonfiction K-6 presented by Tony Stead

Over 85% of the reading and writing we do as adults is nonfiction, yet over 80% of literacy instruction is with narrative. In this dynamic and impacting session, Tony will share proven strategies for teaching students to become competent readers and writers of nonfiction. Examples ranging from the early years to fluency in middle years will be highlighted.

Issues to be addressed will include:
• Identifying the skills students need as nonfiction readers and writers
• Successful ways to teach identified strategies
• A framework for teaching nonfiction reading and writing
• Making the link with content studies
• Providing a system for inquiry based learning.

When: Wednesday 20th August, 9am-3pm
Where: Tattersall's Park Function Centre
