The Tasmanian Heritage Council and Heritage Tasmania are developing a Tasmanian Register of War Memorials. In this context memorials include major cenotaphs, civic memorials, memorial avenues and tree plantings, smaller obelisks, sculptures, statues, honour rolls, plaques, commemorative windows, memorial halls, gardens, gates, etc.

There is an earlier database developed in 1996 by Fred Thornett (now deceased) which consisted of a typed register of some 750 war memorials located across Tasmania, and this now forms the basis of developing a new register which will eventually be put online. However, the Thornett register has no photographs and it needs to be brought up-to-date.

It would be appreciated if schools could assist with this project and provide a listing and photograph of all memorials they have located at their premises around Tasmania.  The photographs should be taken at high resolution to enable all names and text to be clearly readable.

It would be appreciated if the listing/photographs of memorials held at school facilities could be sent to John Wadsley by email. john@wadsleyplanning.com.au
