In this presentation Judith will present a framework for exploring word consciousness, facilitating learning about words and the language used in academic settings. She will detail research and present a variety of ways to integrate vocabulary learning into classrooms.

Ideas and activities will include:
  • becoming word learners through apprenticeship (e.g., word collectors, using rich literature as models for writing)
  • creating a playful, safe environment for exploring vocabulary to invite students into the world of words (e.g., playing games with words, honouring heritage languages)
  • learning specific words and word parts (morphology)
  • using poetry
  • teaching idioms
  • creating class books
  • exploring a unit on Persuasive Writing Using Real Estate Ads
