Rethinking Writing Instruction

Alison will share with participants the key factors research tells us will make a difference to improving the writing achievement of students. These will be exemplified with examples from classroom practice and from her recently published text 'Effective Writing Instruction: Evidence based classroom practices (2013; Eleanor Curtain Publishing, Melbourne).
In particular she will explore a range of ways to prepare students for writing, the development of a teaching programme that includes a variety of writing opportunities and instructional approaches and the integration of formative assessment and metacognitive approaches to actively involve students in the process of learning to write, learning about writing and learning through writing.
