Education outreach: Australasian Antarctic Expedition 2013-14

Contact: Professor Chris Turney, University of New South Wales

Location: Online

Intended Audience: Primary schools; teachers & students

I am leading a scientific expedition across the Southern Ocean and Antarctic continent. Called the Australasian Antarctic Expedition 2013-2014, we are following the route of the great Australian scientist and explorer Sir Douglas Mawson.

Labelled the Spirit of Mawson, we have a dedicated education program where school children can follow our progress and discoveries as we head south.

We're trying to recapture the excitement of scientific exploration that was so common 100 years ago.

Building on the national Doodle4Google competition and the winning teacher heading south, students/schools can join us in the Antarctic virtually (using a variety of social media including streamed film footage via Google's Hangouts on Air; the programme is on the website for download) and also access a number of lesson plans that are being generated on the voyage by teachers accompanying us on the voyage.

In the lead up to the expedition that departs on 27 November, we are posting an object a day on the website under the title 'History of Antarctic Exploration in 30 Objects' which we hope will help support teachers in the classroom.
