Location: Hobart
Date of Event: Wednesday 11 September           RSVP: Friday 6 September

Intended Audience: Year 11 & 12 students and teachers

The ABC no longer takes work experience students from years 10 to 12 - instead the focus is on placements and internships with the University of Tasmania.

To ensure that Tasmanian secondary and senior secondary students get a taste of a media career or an idea of what they would need to do to join the ABC, tours of the ABC in Hobart are being offered.

The first tour is scheduled for September 11 from 3.30 - 5pm at the ABC Centre, 1 Liverpool St., Hobart.

The visits aim to give students
  • An overview of the ABC's activities - especially in Tasmania and the breadth of platforms ABC staff work on.
  • Understanding of the role of ABC.
  • Clearer understanding of what various media jobs entail.
  • Understanding of the types of jobs available at the ABC. These include journalism, radio production, operational skills (camera, edit, sound) and technical.
  • Overview of qualifications necessary for jobs.
  • Indication of pace of change in media.
  • Engagement with them on where they access media.
The tours would meet ABC managers and staff and hear stories about what they do and how they got into the media industry.

There would be a demonstration of some of the technologies used - e.g. tv and radio studios, where content goes on ABC online pages, potential to look at social media postings.
