Support of school is sought during Legacy Week. Schools with community support programmes are invited to participate.

Throughout Tasmania, Legacy support in excess of three thousand widows and dependants of deceased ex-service personnel who either died in war or subsequently. As a result of more recent conflicts Legacy, which has been in existence since the 1920's, supports not only ageing widows of the World Wars but also young families, some with school aged children. Legacy Week is Legacy's annual national fund raising event. The ability of the organisation to provide ongoing support relies on both the financial aid, freely given by the public, many of whom actively seek out the opportunity to obtain a badge each year, and the volunteers who help us distribute the badges.

This year Legacy Week is 1st to 7th September; Major badge days being Thursday 5th and Friday 6th. Launceston Legacy coordinates the appeal throughout the North, North-East and North-West of the State, Hobart Legacy, the South.

A number of Tasmanian schools have provided active support to Legacy Week over a number of years. Some arrange rosters of students to help staff appeal points in local malls and shopping centres. Others choose to take the chance to distribute Legacy Badges within the school. Students who volunteer to participate, invariably say it is a fun activity and enjoy the confidence they gain whilst aiding a worthy cause.

All appeal volunteers are covered by Legacy's public risk insurance and minors are always under adult supervision. Legacy acknowledge the participation of each volunteer with a certificate of appreciation.

Schools and young people generally, show strong support for commemorative activities such as Anzac Day. With the support of Schools, the same young Australians may care to provide practical support to the dependants of those who fought for our country.
