Evidence Based Practice for Moderate to Severe Speech Disorders: Treatments, service delivery issues and strategies for problem solving – Presented by Associate Professor Tricia McCabe

Tricia McCabe is Head of Discipline and Associate Professor in Speech Pathology in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney.
  • Tricia's research, teaching and clinical practice are all focused on improving treatments for moderate-severe speech impairments in children and adults. Within this area she has a number of interests including treatments for Childhood Apraxia of Speech CAS, also known as dyspraxia, 
  • Disorders of speech which cause impairments to production of polysyllabic words and longer linguistic units, 
  • The comparison of phonological and articulation treatments to demonstrate relative effectiveness and efficiency 
  • The use of ultrasound for biofeedback in speech pathology.
Tricia is interested in the application of the principles of speech motor learning to new treatments for CAS particularly and articulation and voice disorders more generally. She is also interested in the application of Evidence Based Practice EBP in speech pathology, speech pathology service delivery innovations and exploring professional voice user training.

The Family Partnership Model FPM is an innovative, evidence–based model of the helping process. The model demonstrates how specific helper qualities and skills, when used in partnership, enable parents, families and others to overcome their challenges, build strengths, resilience and enable their goals to be achieved effectively.

The FPM training explores all aspects of the model that support the building of genuine and respectful partnerships towards achieving improved outcomes for children and their families.

The program has two components including a professional learning component and FPM in Action project.

Get it right for Dyslexia – Get it Right For All

A solution focused approach, using evidence validated techniques to raise the achievement of the 20 plus per cent of students who do not have a label of Dyslexia but who will have clear Dyslexic Type Learning Needs. DTLN.

These students are typically unsupported in the classroom and rely on the ability of their teacher to notice and adjust – to notice the thinking gap between ideas expressed orally and adjust tasks, methods and approaches to ensure that evidence of ability appropriate achievement can be secured, despite current weaknesses in basic literacy skills

My Education Career Planning for Students With Disability - Workshop

Family Partnership Model One Day Reflective Workshop

This one-day workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to review and also be introduced to the key components of the FPM and the new Reflective Practice Handbook and resources. The workshop provides participants with an opportunity to:
  • Reflect on key components of the Family Partnership Model FPM
  • Share reflections and learning's of how the FPM can be used as a framework for working with families and colleagues
  • Consider the Family Partnership Model as a framework for reflective practice in the workplace
Explore and become familiar with the new FPM Reflective Practice Handbook, including its practice resources designed to support the implementation of FPM in practice.

The Smart Services and Systems Research Group in the School of Engineering and ICT has developed an internet-accessible 'Remote Lab' for IoT Internet of Things systems programming. This system provides local schools 7-12 with a large range of modular, configurable experiments as part of the Digital Technology Curriculum.

Schools can directly use this system to deliver online robotics programming curricula without the considerable fiscal and technical overheads of purchasing hardware and employing a software engineer/technician to configure modules and write supporting software and teaching materials.

Kids Like Us KLU has been running screenings of Tom Ropelewski's 2e: Twice Exceptional for some time now, as in its fifty-four minute run time it offers a unique insight into the world of twice-exceptional 2e children.

2e people are incredibly unrepresented, with many unaware that they exist at all. These are people who are intellectually above average, while also having a challenge of some kind – this may be officially identified as living with one or more disabilities, learning differences or social emotional problems …or it may not. Often, as young people, they are discarded by the system, being seen as lazy, disengaged or troublemakers. Worse still is when they come to believe this themselves. These children are often anxious, depressed and even, in extreme cases, suicidal.

This workshop will provide hands on training in how to manage iPad settings, including backing up apps, using guided access, using 'the cloud', setting up and managing an iTunes account and using alternate access methods.

We will discuss what an iPad can be used for and look at a range of apps that can be useful in assisting development e.g. fine motor skills, letter formation, visual perceptual skills, literacy skills, communication skills, apps that can be used as a therapy tool across environments e.g. visual schedules, social scripts, calming, transitions, recognising emotion-sand how and when to use technology to create independence as well as social skills. New Integrated Resource
The Department of Education has recently launched a free Tasmanian educational resource designed with you in mind. It can be downloaded onto classroom tablets or used on smart screens. It features stunning Tasmanian colonial paintings, maps, photographs of convicts and handwritten letters to be explored by your students.

What can it be used to teach?
The resource encourages project based learning. By working through the Australian Curriculum subjects of History, Science, English, Visual and Media Arts, and Digital Technologies students create field guides, stories, films, artwork and research that builds into their own portfolio of work. The central task is for students to create their own physical or digital sketchbook. Your class can spend a week, a month or a term working on it.
